W40 sprinter Charmaine Roberts starred at Lahti for Team USA (and I have the photos to prove it eventually). Her local paper featured Charmaine today with this nice write-up. “We put in a lot of hard work in the weeks leading up to that meet,” Charmaine told writer Ted Black. He reports that Roberts came to the United States from her native Jamaica in the fall of 1987 to run track for Division II Alabama A&M University. “We train five times a week and it gets harder as you get closer to the meets,” she said. “We focus more on speed work, spend more time on the track and do more intervals. During the offseason we focus on longer runs.”

I was very proud of our new group of USA Masters Sprinters. Hopefully this will inspire some more ladies to get in the game. All of the ladies put on a show and wore the USA Uniform with pride.
The other countries recognized our women’s sprint power.

Charmaine, is an athlete of a particular charm. Very staid and sure of if. Fascinating really. In her I see the composure of the sensuality of the American women that I like you/they!
Charmaine rocks. A long, elegant stride defines her brilliant sprinting, and for some reason she always seems to be in the lead. Hope to see Charmaine at the Potomac Valley meet on Labor Day weekend.

FANTASTIC Charmaine!!! Well-deserved! Can’t wait to see you “mash it up” again Indoors!!
Charmaine was simply outstanding in Lahti, as a performer, a USA teammate, and an ambassador for everything that is right about US Masters. I had a chance to speak with Ms. Roberts a few times before her races, and she was always respectful of the competition, and was cautious about predicting the outcome in her humble manner. But man, did she show her stuff when the push came to shove! She was so expert and patient in the early stage of her 400 final, but had such superior strength in the last 100, surely being a product somewhat of her off-season distance work. Congratulations to a real champion, and a true representative of the USA squad.
