Marie Kay dominates W50 events at Oceania masters regional meet
Marie Kay at Lahti worlds.
Last year when she was 49, Marie Kay never got the memo to take it easy. Oldest in her age group? Time to cruise? Not our Marie. Instead, she set a W45 world record in the heptathlon at Lahti worlds and also dominated hurdles and jumps (amid injury). In January, Marie turned 50. So what’s the latest for Marie? Well, our Aussie superstar was in Tahiti last week for the Oceania Masters Athletics
Championships — and missed Christine MГјeller’s W50 world record in the hep by 196 points. (But she got the Oceania record by 2,710.) Results from the July 3-10 meet in Papeete, Tahiti, are right here. Besides winning the hep with 5,832 points, Marie grabbed gold in the 100 (14.10), 200 (28.37), 400 (65.50), 80-meter hurdles (13.29) and long jump in 4.59 (15-0 3/4). Whew! Here’s Marie winning the 400-meter final at Lahti. Watch for the flying ponytail and painful last 10 meters.
Congrats Marie your magnificent performances at the Games despite many setbacks. Your purpose in the Masterstrack and field world is to inspire, and you do!!!

Congratulations, Marie! Certainly Marie Kay is one of the most talented, hard-working, technically proficient, competitive, and tenacious track and field athletes in the history of the sport. I thought I was halucinating when I first ever saw her perform at the Worlds in Australia in 2001. Her 2:32.82 800 meters in the hep there was awesome, as part of her W40 hep world record. She is also generous and gracious with her time, being constantly swamped by her fans. If ever she might of rested on her laurels, she added an extra push to the 400 shown here at 390 meters, and injured her leg. Great to see she is back, and hope to see he shine as well at Sacramento in 2011.

Marie is PHENOMENAL!!! From the strength, guts, and “ridiculous” talent she displays on the track AND field…to that beautiful smile and that warm, inviting personality. She’s a classy lady who’s simply in a class by herself! Many CONGRATS again Marie! Can’t wait to see your awesomeness in person again next year!

Marie is an absolutely phenomenal athlete, some might even say a ‘freak’ – and I’m one of the luckiest people in the world as I train with her, her encouragement and training ethic is both amazing and inspirational to not only me but our whole squad. When you are down or just not having a good day she is always there with a hug and a beautiful smile. Her recent performances in Kamloops, Perth and Tahiti are just legendary especially with the adverse build up she had to these championships, never once did anyone ever hear her talk about her injury or use it as an excuse – not that she had to!!!! Marie you truly are an inspiration to athletes of all ages – those who compete and those you coach and I’m so lucky to have you as my beautiful friend.
